Girl Meets World is a sequel series to the iconic 1990s show Boy Meets World, and it aired from 2014 to 2017 on Disney Channel. Created by Michael Jacobs and April Kelly, the show follows Riley Matthews, the teenage daughter of Cory and Topanga Matthews from the original series. Riley, portrayed by Rowan Blanchard, embarks on her own journey of self-discovery and growth, navigating the complexities of adolescence with the support of her friends and family.
The show successfully captures the spirit of its predecessor while introducing new elements to resonate with a younger generation. Riley’s best friend, Maya Hart, played by Sabrina Carpenter, brings a spirited and often rebellious energy to the show, creating a dynamic and engaging contrast with Riley’s more optimistic and idealistic nature. The friendship between Riley and Maya mirrors the bond between Cory and Shawn from Boy Meets World, adding a sense of continuity and familiarity for longtime fans of the original series.
Girl Meets World also features the return of several beloved characters from Boy Meets World, including Cory Matthews, now a high school history teacher, and Topanga Matthews, who runs a career center. These returning characters serve as mentors and parental figures, bridging the gap between the old and new generations and providing continuity to the storyline. Their presence adds depth to the show, allowing for moments of nostalgia while integrating new storylines and characters.
The series is notable for addressing contemporary issues relevant to its young audience, including social media, relationships, and self-identity, all while maintaining the heartwarming and educational tone that characterized Boy Meets World. Despite its critical acclaim and strong fan base, Girl Meets World concluded after three seasons. However, it left a lasting impact by continuing the legacy of its predecessor and introducing timeless themes of friendship, family, and personal growth to a new generation of viewers.
Here's another update. Disney Channel’s Girl Meets World, the eagerly awaited sequel to Boy Meets World, has undergone a significant change with the departure of Teo Halm from the cast. Halm was originally cast to play Elliot Matthews, the eldest child of Cory and Topanga Matthews, characters reprised by Ben Savage and Danielle Fishel. The family was initially envisioned to include three children: Elliot, Riley (Rowan Blanchard), and a younger brother named Louis (August Maturo).
According to TVLine, the casting change was part of a broader series of "creative adjustments" Disney decided to implement as the show transitioned from pilot to series. This shift led to the decision to remove the character of Elliot from the storyline.
Halm announced the news on Twitter on Saturday (October 5), expressing his understanding of the decision: "So guys, Disney decided that it wouldn't work to have an older brother on the show; I won't be on Girl Meets World. Thank you..."
Bummer!
